Former dictator Jorge Rafael Videla sentenced to life imprisonment in Federal jail
Télam. National News Agency of Argentina. Dec. 23, 2010. Former dictator Jorge Rafael Videla, the first of the military dictatorship´s four Presidents, was sentenced on Wednesday’s afternoon to life imprisonment for human rights violations, to be served in a Federal jail, as informed by Télam on Thursday.
The sentence was passed by Oral Federal Tribunal 1 (TOF 1) in the city of Córdoba, that imposed a similar sentence to former General Luciano Benjamín Menéndez. But in this case a medical team shall decide whether Menéndez´ health condition permits a house arrest.
Judges Jaime Díaz Gavier, Carlos Lascano and José María Pérez Villalobos ruled that Videla was responsible of tortures imposed on political prisoners (in 30 proved cases), aggravated homicides with a plurality of participants (29 cases) and tortures followed by death (one case).
As to Menéndez, the sentence was based on similar charges as in Videla´s case, committed against people forced to do, or not to do, or to tolerate something they were not supposed to endure. They included 30 cases of homicides against political prisoners.
In this trial, which started on July 2nd, the Oral Tribunal also passed life sentences against former military officers Vicente Meli, Mauricio Poncet, Raúl Fierro, Jorge González Navarro, Gustavo Alsina, Pedro Mones Ruiz and Miguel Angel Pérez.
The same penalty was imposed to former policemen Carlos Yanicelli, Miguel Angel Gómez, Luis Lucero, Calixto Flores, Yamil Jabour, Marcelo Luna and Ramón Molina.
Other accused received different sentences: Juan Huber, 14 years, Victorino Cano, 12 years, Carlos Hibar Pérez, 10 years, Mirta Antón, seven years and Fernando Rocha, eight years.
The court, on the other hand, acquitted Osvaldo Quiroga, Francisco D`Aloia, Cayetano Rocha, Luis Alberto Rodríguez, José Paredes, Luis Merlo and Gustavo Salgado.
The reading of the long sentence was followed, out of the court building, by a large number of Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, members of other human rights organizations and relatives of the dictatorship´s victims. Some of them wept but most cheered on hearing the life sentences passed against most of the accused.
Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, 1980 Nobel Prize winner, the Federal Government´s Human Rights Secretary, Eduardo Luis Duhalde, Córdoba City Mayor Daniel Giacommino, the Rector of the University of Córdoba, Carolina Scotto and many other public officials were also present.
The accusation against the dictatorship´s military and police members was based on the death of 32 political inmates of the San Martín Penitentiary Unit, who were shot to death following a forged jailbreak attempt.
